Halle Saint Gery marks the spot where the city of Brussels is reputed to have been founded and could be compared to the Wood Quay of Dublin in historic terms and could be best described today as the West Bank of Paris or the Temple Bar of Dublin. Place St. Gery is the trendy district where you'll find plenty of live music, clubs, restaurants, cafes and bars. Great for a night out with friends and/or loved ones, Place St. Gery has some of the classic cafe fronts and entertainment districts that makes a visit to Brussels complete. The vibrant area of Place St. Gery is particularly keen for the young crowd, hosting the after-work crowd right into the late-night party goers. Many of the cafes in Place St. Gery have expansive outdoor seating, making the area good for people-watching and a quick bite during your coffee break. It is 7 minutes walk form the Grand Place and 2 minutes from the Stock Exchange and financial services district and 5 minutes from the metro and tram connections.
Between 17,000 and 20,000 should visit the Irish in Europe Art and Photo Exhibition and another 40,000 visitors will be exposed to the exhibition boards that will be on display on the exterior of the cultural centre. About one 100,000 people should pass by one side elevation of the Centre that will have the Cork and Westport Flagship Photo Billboards the could include the prominent display of the new Ireland.Com web site It is the wealthy who will be mainly visiting the centre and the class of people who would be captive audience to visit Ireland for activity and weekend break holidays.

Thousands of City Break Holiday Makers stay in the Saint Gery Hotel Quarter
Holiday City Review
Hotels in Saint Gery are quite diversified with choices of budget friendly to luxury hotels, catering to your needs. Generally, this district is famous among ardent bargain hunters and luxury shoppers; you'll be delighted that most budget hotels offer affordable and decent room along with basic amenities and toiletries. Some hotels even offer currency exchange service for guests as value added amenities and multilingual staffs as part of customer service.
Saint Gery - Well known for its trendy and vibrant Rue Dansaert district, Saint Gery is renowned for well established fashion industry, with plenty of designer boutiques, which exploded into huge industry just about fifteen years ago. The grandeur of its fashion houses attracts tons of shoppers to flood this place all year long, scouting and hunting for the 'it' trend of the day. Some designer houses such as Strelli, produces limited hand crafted clothes which makes the district more sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of fine clothing from all over the world.
Nevertheless, not everything is about shopping here; you'll be amazed with many of its original architectural features in many buildings around here. One notable structure is the Saint Gery Hall, a covered market build in 1881 by a famous Belgian architect, Dubois. You'll find the hall still preserved in its original structure and fittings to this day, and a major exhibition centre devoted to preserve and display the heritage and culture of Brussels.

Lonely Planet review for Halles St-Géry
"Occupying a huge, tiered former market hall on what was once an island, Halles St-Géry has an enormous obelisk at its centre marking ‘kilometre zero’ – the point from which all distances in Belgium are measured. Halles St-Géry now hosts art exhibitions by day, and the bar cranks of an evening when DJs spin funk, house and more. In summer, the party spills outdoors and goes on until the wee hours.

“Super place for drinks or meals until late. Don't miss the Halles Saint-Géry !”

The former market hall on Place Saint-Géry with its scene cafés is an unusual place of calmness. Inside you can inform yourself on the history of the place, but also just drink a coffee or a tea while letting the unusual flair of the hall with its blank girders impress you. Down under the hall is a room for exhibition where varying art exhibitions are shown which can be worth a visit.

The Saint-Géry Halls, genuine witnesses of covered markets, houses an information centre devoted to heritage and the living environment of the inhabitants of Brussels, under the aegis of the Brussels Capital Region.
What´s Up in Belgium
Les halles St Gery is one of the Brussels hotspots where young people come to chill, hang out, have a beer, look good, socialise, be seen, be cool, have fun and a recent addition to the bar/museum is that they have a dance floor! During the day les halles doubles up as a museum which allows people to come in wonder around and chill by the lounge area to have a drink. the expostion is on the area of ST Gery itself and how it has developed over the years from a run down part of Brussels to the rejuvenated, social hub that it is now. During the evening the museum turns into a cool bar where you can drink an infamous giraffe which is a little over-priced and the beer is not great but its a novelty and fun if you are in a group.

1000 - Bruxelles / Brussel
The covered market halls stand on the site of the church of Saint-Géry, which was built in the 16th century in the middle of the Grande Ile. An old tradition has it that the chapel which preceded that church was the oratory of Charles of France, who is said to have been the founder of Brussels. Historic research raises increasing doubts on this subject. But the place is important: around the Ile (historic centre) there used to be four watermills, the sources of power of medieval industry. We are truly at the historic heart of Brussels here. After the church was demolished during the French Revolution, an obelisk fountain which came from Grimbergen abbey was erected in the middle of the square. The Saint-Géry market was built in 1881 around this obelisk by the architect Dubois. It now houses two associations entrusted with the heritage and environment of Brussels, and many exhibitions are held there.
“I love the space of Les Halles de Saint Gery. The space is open and airy and it has a large outdoor seating area. When the weather is nice, it's great to sit outside and people watch on this busy area. The indoor area is very nice. The space always has a photo or an art exhibition of local artists and great music. The drinks are affordable and it is always happening even on a weeknight. I'm a local and I come here quite often. I was at Les Halles this weekend and they covered the whole inside with real grass. I don't know how much longer it will be there but it was pretty cool! “
“We had some super nice cocktails in The Halles St. Gery! Large, beautiful, old industrial, renovated building. Great music, photography exhibition, warm atmosphere. A lot of cosy, trendy, alternative bars in the neighbourhood close to the Bourse. See and get seen there!
Crammed with bars and restaurants and located around an old marketplace now turned into a bar and exposition center the square has it all. Packed with people at the end of the day, lots of terraces and a really nice atmosphere if you are having a night out with friends or colleagues.
“A couple of years ago, this part of the
city was almost abandoned.
Since about 10 to 15 years considerable efforts have been made to give a
new impulse it.
The first major step was the refurbishing and modernisation of the Halles
Saint-Géry in the middle of the square.
It is now often used for exhibitions and performances of at least good quality.
Around the Halles, there are now many cafés, bars and small restaurants with
terraces in summer. The atmosphere is relaxed and artistic. Very pleasant place
to go ! “
“This area is full of bars and restaurants, and has the right vibe whatever the time of day you are there. Le roi de Belges is perfect for a lazy Sunday brunch, with it's choice of food and drink, chilled out beats, and laid back customers. We were also here one night for drinks in February. With a good choice of beers and some good background music, it was perfect. Then, more recently we were lucky enough to get a table outside on the street. Since this bar is on a corner, if you enjoy people-watching, then this is the place for you. You can see crowds strolling by, or sitting outside one of the other bars (watching you). Le Cafe des Halles is another perfect choice for an evening/night out. Good choice of beers, and great background music with DJ's spinning pre-clubbing/chill-out music. (It's possibly open all day for coffees, but i don't know for sure) ”

“The city of Brussels is said to have originated from Place St Gery, set in one of the most chic neighbourhoods in the city, the Halles Saint-Gery district. The square is dominated by an 1881 red brick building, the Halles Saint-Gery. This glass-roofed building once served as the local meat market. In 1982, it was rebuilt as a shopping gallery and as a regional centre for cultural promotion of national heritage in 1992, where exhibits are showcased, ranging from Medieval art to a Tintin comic retrospective. Just north of the Hales stands the Beursschouwburg, a new centre of arts open to artists and visionaries of tomorrow. Devoted to theatre, art, music, dance, film and video, the complex also hosts a cafe where free concerts of young talented musicians are held. To the south of Halles Saint-Gery, a wharf reconstruction of the river Senne is found. The canal runs next to the Notre-Dame des Riches Claires Church – a renovated structure with strong Flemish Baroque influences, and near the performance stage of the Riches Claires Auditorium.”Celebrating 40 years of Ireland’s Membership of the European Union 1973 – 2013

Cork Irish Village 2012
-Brussels-
Twinning Brussels and Cork
The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee each year designates in the Schuman Area of the EU Quarter in Brussels an Area to be known as the Irish Village to be named after a town in Ireland with cultural, trade or heritage significance and on a rotational basis. The Parade route takes place each year in this designated Irish village.
The Parade Committee had shortlisted a number of towns in Ireland for the twinning project to promote that town in the Irish Village Area and of course in Belgium at large.
On been informed on December 23rd last that Aer Lingus were to commence direct flights between Brussels and Cork from March 26, the Committee reviewed its decision and decided in the Irish National interest and in the interest of greater Irish – Belgian Trade and Cultural Relations to designate the Village this year as the Cork Irish Village and to make an all out effort to help make this new route viable to become an all year round service.
The Irish in Europe Association launched a public relations awareness campaign in January in Belgium and Ireland calling on people to support this new route.
(See http://www.meetup.com/Irish-in-Europe/files/ )
